Description

In addition to his status as one of baseball’s greats, the gregarious “Babe” Ruth was also known for his warm-hearted generosity. Presented is a c.1930 engraved sterling silver cigarette case weighing 4.5 ounces. This fine example of Ruth’s generous nature bears the engraved inscription “To My Best Friend Lou Your’s, Babe Ruth” on the back of the case. While we have no proof that the addressed Lou was Gehrig, it is highly likely. In support of this belief the case features a raised relief baseball bat positioned between the salutation and Ruth’s engraved signature. The front of the case features a raised silver baseball surrounded by a blue enamel field with the words “Babe & Ruth” impressed above and below the relief style stitches and the letters “N Y” on the sweet spot. This significant relic presents in well-preserved condition with modest signs of wear reinforcing its period authenticity. The inside of the case includes elastic bands on either side to retain cigarettes and displays a very modest amount of tarnish confined to the inner sections.
