While media coverage of sporting events has grown to dizzying heights in a society with excessive demands for “here and now,” the process has been a lengthy one with significant milestones flecking the path. From a simpler era during which print media was gospel, Sports Illustrated combined with a booming economy and extended television coverage to contribute to soaring popularity of spectator sports. Pre-dating the digital age, these vintage printing plates were used in the production of early S.I. issues and presented to publishing pioneer John Norwood, who was part of the Time-Life team that launched the weekly sports magazine. Mounted to a wooden slab measuring 27-3/4 x 19-1/4”, the plates include the August 16, 1954 inaugural cover and the August 28, 1967 cover with America’s Cup champion “Intrepid.”
